JNU class ‘raided’ by varsity security for screening movie – The Hindu

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have alleged that the varsity’s security unit “raided” a classroom where a movie was being screened as part of the academic curriculum.

A student of the department said: “Two guards questioned us about the movie that was being screened and whether we have permission to screen it? It is highly disappointing that a classroom is under surveillance on the order of the university administration. If it is not confronted, soon there will be CCTV cameras and audio recorders our classrooms and centres.” The university authorities maintained that the intervention happened “mistakenly”.

The assaults on the University of Hyderabad (HCU) and JNU are part of the same war that has been declared on public education in this country. Everyone who has stood with JNU for the last one and a half months, stands with HCU and JNU today.

Obviously then, the website cannot be just about standing with JNU. We stand with JNU, with HCU, and with all public institutions that are facing the assault from the Sangh Parivar.

The website will strive to bring the news of this assault to rest of the world, and to archive the glorious resistance that students, teachers and staff of these institutions have built to this fascist assault.

In solidarity with comrades in Hyderabad.

We shall fight, we shall win.

HCU students demand release of arrested students and teachers

Shiva Sai Ram, March 24, 6 pm

Just returned from administration building after submitting a representation along with fellow Political science dept. students regarding the release of all the jailed students and faculty. We sat down in the admin lawns to relax and wait for other friends to arrive and make a press statement. Within moments two police vans arrived at the scene and the security personnel asked us to vacate the lawns. The police have a problem with where we sit, where we cook, what we eat and what we discuss. The police are hell bent to instill fear psychosis among the students. Our exams are scheduled to start from 15th of April. How are we supposed to prepare in such circumstances. How can we concentrate when our friends with whom we study, research and protest are thrown behind bars and subjected to inhuman torture inside the prison. I urge everyone who is standing with us today to demand for the release of our arrested friends and then demilitarise the campus.
Also, we received lots of food materials from various organisations and people of Hyderabad. Thanks for all the love and support heart emoticon Stand strong with us!

Roundtable India: What’s happening in University of Hyderabad now

Roundtable India is also putting together news from the Hyderabad Central University:

No University for Dalits | The Wire

Ten Dalit students were rusticated from the University of Hyderabad in 2001; one of them recounts the events as they played out.

Dalits, he says, have always been discriminated against and Podile, according to him, is one of the biggest perpetrators of such discrimination. “Many Dalit students couldn’t go home during vacations and they would stay on to study at the hostels,” he explained. “Chief Warden Podile would take these students to the main gate in jeeps and ask them to get out, calling them ‘unofficial’. These were students who were on the rolls of the University,” he recalled.

Hot on the heels of the JNU controversy, the Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust (SAHMAT) organised a  symposium at the Constitution Club  on “The Assault on Thought”. The list of speakers at the Sunday event included academicians, lawyers, and JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar. The confluence of red and blue colours on stage sent a clear message on what direction the symposium would head towards.

BJP’s brand of patriotism

Anand Teltumbde in the Deccan Herald:

The party whose parentage remained infamously reluctant to accept the tricolour as the national flag until yesterday has come out with a diktat that all Central universities will fly the 135 kg tricolor flag on a mast of 207 feet height.
