IIT Guwahati: A Statement of Solidarity with the Students and Teachers of JNU

We, the undersigned, students and teachers of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, express our solidarity with the students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi,in their ongoing struggle against the assault of the central government on the autonomy and idea of a university. As students and teachers, we cherish the atmosphere where we can freely debate, discuss and understand the world we live in, and we deem any arbitrary and uncalled intervention in the affairs of an educational institution as an act of utmost disrespect and disregard for the vocation we practice and the democratic values enshrined in our constitution. Over the last several months, we have witnessed consistent interference by political leaders and the state machinery in the internal affairs of educational institutions whether it be in the case of Hyderabad Central University, FTII, IIT Madrasand other such esteemed institutions. We see this as an extremely dangerous trend that can undermine the idea and purpose of education in this country.

We are also deeply concerned about the singular understanding of nation and nationalism that is being imposed on us by the present government. We reject that understanding of nation and nationalism which does not respect differences and uphold democratic values. India that we hold dear is a land where various different peoples and cultures, of various different languages, races and faiths live together in deep respect and regard for each other, a land that is imperfect in many ways, yet a land that constantly strives for the dignity, equality andfreedomof every citizen. It is this idea of India that we represent and we will not allow any subversion of this idea by forces that are bent on spreading hatred and violence.

We hope the government realizes the imprudence of waging war on the students of this country. We hope the witch-hunting of students will stop and educational institutions will be granted the freedom and autonomy to be once again spaces of discussion, debate and learning. We extend our solidarity to teachers and students throughout this country, especially to JNU at this present juncture, as they struggle to reclaim their democratic spaces and contribute towards the making of a better India.
